Understanding Disc Herniations: Why Your Pain Isn’t Just About the Disc

If you’re dealing with back pain or sciatica in Port Dalhousie or the greater Niagara Region, you’ve likely been told your pain is coming from a single structure:
A disc.
A joint.
A muscle.
If you’ve been diagnosed with a disc herniation, it may feel like that’s the entire problem.
But your body doesn’t work that way.

What Is a Disc Herniation?

A disc herniation occurs when the inner portion of a spinal disc pushes outward, sometimes irritating nearby nerves. This can lead to symptoms like:
    •    Lower back pain
    •    Sciatica (radiating leg pain)
    •    Numbness or tingling
    •    Muscle weakness
While this diagnosis can sound serious, research shows that many people have disc herniations without any pain at all.
So why do some hurt—and others don’t?

Disc Herniation Pain Is Often Part of a Bigger Pattern

From an osteopathic perspective, a disc herniation is rarely an isolated injury.
Instead, it’s usually part of a larger pattern of compensation in the body.
Your spine constantly adapts to:
    •    How your hips and pelvis move
    •    How your ribcage expands with each breath
    •    Your posture and daily habits (sitting, feeding your baby, lifting, etc.)
    •    Tension patterns in your muscles and fascia
Over time, these factors change how your spine is loaded.
A disc herniation often develops gradually, not because something suddenly “went wrong,” but because your body has been adapting for a while.

Why Treating Only the Disc Can Slow Recovery

Many treatments focus only on the injured disc.
But this can miss the bigger picture.
Without addressing underlying movement patterns, you may experience:
    •    Recurring back pain
    •    Persistent sciatica
    •    Ongoing flare-ups despite rest or exercise
The disc is part of the story—but not the whole story.

A Better Question to Ask

Instead of asking:
“What’s wrong with my back?”
Try asking:
👉 “What is my body adapting to?”
This shift moves the focus from damage → adaptation, which is key for long-term healing.

Osteopathic Treatment for Disc Herniation in St. Catharines & Niagara

At Dalhousie Health and Wellness, Krista Robazza takes a whole-body approach to disc herniation treatment in St. Catharines and the Niagara region.
Treatment may include:
    •    Improving hip and pelvic mobility to reduce spinal strain
    •    Supporting ribcage movement and breathing mechanics
    •    Releasing tension through manual osteopathic therapy
    •    Addressing posture and daily habits contributing to overload
By redistributing load throughout the body, we reduce stress on the disc and support natural healing.

You’re Not Broken

A disc herniation doesn’t mean your body is permanently damaged.
It means your body has been adapting.
When those adaptations are supported:
    •    Pain can decrease
    •    Movement can improve
    •    Confidence can return
