Let Me Explain Why?
Acupuncture is rooted in Traditional Chinese Medicine which looks at the whole mind, body and spirit. If something is off balance, we see symptoms such as “weight gain”.
The good news? Not all weight gain is fat. Sometimes the body is sluggish in digestion, or there is slow movement of the intestines causing food stagnation. There are acupoints for that!Additionally, fluctuating hormones, water retention, stress, cravings, blood stasis can all be underlying reasons why we are retaining ‘material’ of the body.
In TCM, there is yin and yang. Yang represents warming, function, movement, brightness, flow and energy. Yin on the other hand, is dense, material, storage, fluid, blood, water and cold.
Your acupuncturist will look at your tongue and pulse to determine if there is too much yin, not enough, too much yang or not enough. Then we come up with a treatment plan to balance your body as an individual.

How it might help
Acupuncture may indirectly support weight management by:
● Reducing stress and anxiety, which can contribute to emotional eating.
● Improving sleep quality.
● Helping some people feel more mindful about eating habits.
● Potentially affecting appetite-regulating hormones.
● Reducing water retention
● Increasing digestion

What to expect
● Expect to feel relaxed, experience improved sleep patterns, have deep rest
● Your acupuncturist will provide you with a suggested list of foods to include in your diet, and possibly, foods to avoid
● Improved digestion and increased bowel movements

Safety
Acupuncture is generally safe when performed by a licensed practitioner using sterile needles. Possible side effects include:
● Minor bruising
● Soreness at needle sites
● Lightheadedness

Other effective options
For meaningful and sustained weight loss in addition to acupuncture, your acupuncturist will advise of:
1. Nutritious food according to your constitutional body type
2. Discuss the nature of foods
3. Regular physical activity such as walking, yoga, meditation, tai chi or qi gong

Who should receive acupuncture:

● Natural fertility: if you are just starting your fertility journey, acupuncture can assist with bringing blood flow to the uterus, regulating hormones and calming the nervous system. For males, it can enhance sperm motility and quality.
● IVF and assisted reproduction: like natural conception, the body must be in a healthy condition to receive the IVF treatment, and therefore acupuncture can help to calm the mind, relax nervous system, regulate the menstrual cycle, shed the lining of uterus and supply blood flow for an optimal transfer of embryo
● Conditions such as PCOS/PMOS: studies suggest acupuncture may help regulate menstrual cycles or reduce symptoms, optimizing fertilization

Potential benefits of Acupuncture

Acupuncture works with your body to optimize fertility. It can also,
● Reduce stress and anxiety
● Improve relaxation and sleep
● Help manage chronic pelvic pain or menstrual discomfort
● Support overall well-being during fertility treatment

When it may be worth considering

You might consider acupuncture if:
  • You're undergoing IVF and want additional support for stress management.
  • You have painful periods, pelvic pain, or conditions like Polycystic Ovary Syndrome/Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS)

Researchers have proposed several ways acupuncture might affect fertility:

1. Influence on stress and the nervous system
○ Acupuncture may promote relaxation and reduce perceived stress.
○ Chronic stress can affect hormones involved in reproduction, so some researchers hypothesize that reducing stress could indirectly support fertility.

2. Effects on reproductive hormones
○ Some studies suggest acupuncture may influence the release of hormones through the brain's hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis.
○ This could potentially affect ovulation and menstrual cycle regulation, though the exact mechanisms remain uncertain.

3. Changes in blood flow
○ Researchers have proposed that acupuncture may increase blood flow to the uterus and ovaries.
○ The theory is that improved blood flow could support the uterine lining or ovarian function

4. Management of fertility-related conditions
○ Acupuncture has been studied as a complementary therapy for conditions associated with infertility, such as Polycystic Ovary Syndrome/Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS  and Endometriosis.
○ Some people report improvements in symptoms

5. Support during assisted reproductive technologies
○ Acupuncture is often used around IUI or IVF cycles.
○ Acupuncture might improve implantation rates or pregnancy rates
○ Acupuncture may increase sperm motility and quality

Written by Krysta Robazza, Osteopathic Manual Practitioner - BOOK AN APPOINTMENT WITH KRISTA.
If you've recently experienced a concussion, you may be wondering what you can do to support your recovery. While medical assessment and concussion management should always be the first priority, many people continue to experience symptoms such as headaches, neck pain, dizziness, and fatigue long after the initial injury.
This often leads people to ask: Can osteopathy help after a concussion?

While osteopathy does not treat the concussion itself, osteopathic treatment may help address some of the musculoskeletal issues that can develop alongside a concussion and contribute to ongoing discomfort. For many individuals experiencing post-concussion symptoms, osteopathy can be an important part of a collaborative recovery plan.
What Is a Concussion?A concussion is a mild traumatic brain injury that occurs when a blow, jolt, or sudden movement causes the brain to move within the skull.

 Concussions can result from:

  • Sports injuries
  • Falls
  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Workplace injuries
  • Recreational activities
  • Sports injuries
  • Falls
  • Motor vehicle accidents
  • Workplace injuries
  • Recreational activities

Common concussion symptoms include:

  • Headaches
  • Neck pain
  • Dizziness
  • Balance problems
  • Brain fog
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Sensitivity to light and noise
  • Fatigue
  • Sleep disturbances

Common Post-Concussion Symptoms

Every concussion is unique, but some of the most common symptoms that persist after the initial injury include:
  • Persistent headaches
  • Neck stiffness and pain
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Memory challenges
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Sensitivity to light and sound
  • Balance issues
These symptoms can impact work, sports, exercise, and everyday activities, leading many individuals to seek additional support during their recovery.

Why Neck Pain and Headaches Often Occur After a Concussion

A concussion rarely happens in isolation. The same force that affects the brain can also impact the neck, jaw, upper back, and surrounding muscles and joints.
For example, a sports injury, fall, or motor vehicle accident may create strain throughout the cervical spine (neck), leading to:
  • Neck stiffness
  • Muscle tension
  • Reduced mobility
  • Headaches
  • Jaw discomfort
  • Postural changes
In some cases, these physical issues may continue to contribute to symptoms even as the brain itself is healing.
Because neck pain after a concussion is common, addressing musculoskeletal restrictions may play a role in improving comfort and movement during recovery.

How Can Osteopathy Help After a Concussion?

Osteopathic treatment focuses on the body's structure, movement, and function. During a post-concussion assessment, an osteopath may evaluate:
  • Neck mobility
  • Jaw movement
  • Upper back and rib cage function
  • Breathing mechanics
  • Posture
  • Overall movement patterns
The goal is not to treat the concussion directly, but to identify and address musculoskeletal restrictions and areas of tension that may be contributing to discomfort.

Many patients seek osteopathic care for:

  • Neck pain after a concussion
  • Headaches after a concussion
  • Upper back tension
  • Jaw tightness
  • General stiffness following an injury
Treatment is individualized and uses gentle manual techniques designed to improve mobility and support overall function.

Osteopathy for Post-Concussion Headaches

One of the most common reasons people seek osteopathic treatment after a concussion is persistent headaches.
Post-concussion headaches may be influenced by:
  • Neck tension
  • Restricted cervical mobility
  • Muscle tightness
  • Jaw dysfunction
  • Postural strain
By assessing these contributing factors, osteopathic treatment may help improve comfort, movement, and overall function throughout the recovery process.

Osteopathy for Neck Pain After a Concussion

Neck pain is frequently reported following sports concussions, falls, and motor vehicle accidents.
The forces involved in a concussion often place significant stress on the cervical spine and surrounding tissues. This can result in:
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Muscle guarding
  • Joint restrictions
  • Tension headaches
  • Postural compensations
An osteopathic assessment can help identify areas of restriction and develop an individualized treatment approach aimed at restoring comfortable movement.

Is Osteopathic Treatment Safe After a Concussion?

Before seeking any treatment after a concussion, it is important to be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional.
Once serious complications have been ruled out and you have been medically assessed, osteopathy may be incorporated into a broader recovery plan alongside recommendations from your physician and other healthcare providers.
Every concussion is unique, and treatment should always be tailored to the individual's symptoms, medical history, and stage of recovery.

A Team Approach to Concussion Recovery

Concussion recovery often benefits from a multidisciplinary approach. Depending on your symptoms, your care team may include:
  • Family physicians
  • Nurse practitioners
  • Physiotherapists
  • Vestibular therapists
  • Athletic therapists
  • Occupational therapists
  • Osteopathic manual practitioners
Working together, these professionals can help support different aspects of recovery and ensure you receive comprehensive care.

When Should You Seek Medical Attention?

If you experience any of the following symptoms after a head injury, seek immediate medical care:
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Repeated vomiting
  • Worsening headaches
  • Increasing confusion
  • Seizures
  • Significant weakness or numbness
  • Difficulty speaking
These symptoms require urgent medical evaluation.

Can Osteopathy Help After a Concussion?

While osteopathy does not treat the concussion itself, it may help address neck pain, headaches, muscle tension, and movement restrictions that commonly occur after a concussion or head injury.

If you are experiencing ongoing physical discomfort after a concussion, an osteopathic assessment may help identify musculoskeletal factors contributing to your symptoms and support your recovery as part of a collaborative healthcare approach.

Jaw Clenching, Pelvic Floor Tension, and Stress: How Osteopathy Can Help | St. Catharines & Niagara Region

By Krista Robazza, Osteopathic Manual Practitioner at Dalhousie Health & Wellness

Many people seek osteopathic treatment for jaw pain, TMJ dysfunction, pelvic floor tension, or chronic stress without realizing these concerns may be connected. From an osteopathic perspective, the body functions as an integrated unit, meaning tension in one area can influence function elsewhere.
At Dalhousie Health & Wellness in Port Dalhousie, St. Catharines, Krista Robazza provides osteopathic care for patients throughout the Niagara Region experiencing jaw clenching, pelvic floor dysfunction, chronic muscle tension, and stress-related symptoms.

Understanding the Osteopathic Connection Between Jaw Clenching and Pelvic Floor Tension

While the jaw and pelvic floor may seem unrelated, osteopathy recognizes that breathing patterns, posture, nervous system regulation, and fascial connections can influence both areas.
Jaw clenching and pelvic floor tightness often represent a broader stress response within the body rather than isolated conditions.

The Osteopathic View of Stress and Muscle Tension

Osteopathy views the body as a dynamic system that constantly adapts to physical, emotional, and physiological stress.
When stress becomes chronic, the nervous system may remain in a prolonged protective state, leading to:
    •    Increased muscle tension in the jaw, neck, and shoulders
    •    Reduced diaphragm and rib cage mobility
    •    Abdominal gripping or poor core coordination
    •    Pelvic floor tension and dysfunction
    •    Changes in posture and movement patterns
Rather than treating these symptoms separately, osteopathic treatment aims to identify the underlying patterns contributing to dysfunction.

The Jaw–Pelvis Connection: An Osteopathic Whole-Body Approach
1. Diaphragm, Core, and Pelvic Floor Function

One of the fundamental concepts in osteopathy is the relationship between:
    •    The diaphragm
    •    The abdominal wall
    •    The pelvic floor
    •    Deep spinal stabilizing muscles
Together, these structures create a coordinated pressure system that supports breathing, movement, and stability.
When breathing mechanics become altered due to stress, compensation may occur throughout the body, often affecting both the jaw and pelvic floor.

2. Fascial Connections Throughout the Body

Osteopathic practitioners recognize that fascia—the body's connective tissue network—helps distribute tension and movement throughout the body.
Persistent jaw clenching may be associated with:
    •    Neck and shoulder tension
    •    Altered rib cage movement
    •    Reduced diaphragm function
    •    Increased pelvic floor guarding
    •    Changes in overall movement patterns
Although there is not a single direct connection between the jaw and pelvis, the body's fascial system allows tension patterns to influence multiple regions simultaneously.

3. Nervous System Regulation and Stress Responses

Jaw clenching is commonly associated with increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system, often referred to as the fight-or-flight response.
The pelvic floor may also respond to this heightened state by increasing muscle tone, particularly in individuals experiencing:
    •    Chronic stress
    •    Sleep deprivation
    •    Postpartum recovery
    •    High physical demands
    •    Emotional strain
This pattern is frequently observed in osteopathic practice and highlights the importance of addressing nervous system regulation alongside physical symptoms.

Breathing Mechanics: A Key Focus in Osteopathic Treatment

Healthy breathing plays an essential role in both postural control and nervous system function.
In optimal movement patterns:
    •    The diaphragm descends during inhalation
    •    The pelvic floor lengthens and responds dynamically
    •    The rib cage expands in all directions
    •    The jaw remains relaxed at rest
In stress-driven patterns:
    •    Breathing becomes shallow or chest-dominant
    •    Diaphragm mobility decreases
    •    Pelvic floor muscles remain guarded
    •    Jaw and neck tension increase
This can create a cycle of persistent tension throughout the body.

Common Signs of a Stress-Related Whole-Body Tension Pattern

Patients seeking osteopathic care in St. Catharines and the Niagara Region often report:
    •    Jaw clenching or teeth grinding
    •    TMJ discomfort
    •    Chronic neck and upper back tension
    •    Pelvic floor tightness
    •    Pelvic pressure or urgency
    •    Difficulty relaxing abdominal muscles
    •    Exercise-related pressure or leakage
    •    A constant feeling of tension or bracing
    •    Symptoms that worsen during stressful periods
These symptoms may reflect a larger pattern of nervous system and musculoskeletal adaptation.

Why Jaw Clenching and Pelvic Floor Dysfunction Are Common Postpartum

Many postpartum individuals experience increased tension patterns due to significant physical and hormonal changes.
Factors that may contribute include:
    •    Changes in abdominal and pelvic floor function during pregnancy
    •    Altered breathing mechanics
    •    Rib cage mobility restrictions
    •    Sleep disruption
    •    Increased caregiving demands
    •    Reduced recovery time
The body often prioritizes stability and protection, which can lead to increased muscle tension and movement compensation

Osteopathic Treatment for Jaw Tension and Pelvic Floor Dysfunction in St. Catharines

At Dalhousie Health & Wellness, Krista Robazza uses a whole-body osteopathic approach to assess how different systems may be contributing to symptoms.
Treatment may focus on:
    •    Improving diaphragm mobility
    •    Restoring rib cage movement
    •    Addressing jaw and cervical spine tension
    •    Supporting pelvic floor relaxation and coordination
    •    Improving fascial mobility
    •    Enhancing breathing mechanics
    •    Supporting nervous system regulation
The goal is to improve overall function and coordination throughout the body rather than focusing solely on symptom management.

What You Can Start Noticing Today

Many patients become more aware of patterns such as:
    •    Jaw clenching during concentration
    •    Holding tension in the abdomen
    •    Shallow breathing during stressful situations
    •    Increased pelvic floor symptoms during periods of stress
    •    Neck and shoulder tightness at the end of the day
Recognizing these patterns can provide valuable insight into how your body responds to stress.

When to See an Osteopath for Jaw Clenching or Pelvic Floor Tension

Consider scheduling an osteopathic assessment if you experience:
    •    Persistent jaw pain or TMJ symptoms
    •    Chronic pelvic floor tightness
    •    Stress-related muscle tension
    •    Ongoing neck or shoulder discomfort
    •    Exercise-related pelvic pressure or leakage
    •    Difficulty fully relaxing your body
    •    Symptoms that fluctuate with stress or fatigue
An osteopathic assessment can help identify how different regions of the body may be contributing to your symptoms and develop a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

Osteopathic Care in Port Dalhousie, St. Catharines, and the Niagara Region

Krista Robazza provides osteopathic treatment at Dalhousie Health & Wellness, helping patients from Port Dalhousie, St. Catharines, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Thorold, Welland, Niagara Falls, and throughout the Niagara Region improve movement, reduce tension, and restore whole-body function.
Whether you are experiencing jaw clenching, TMJ discomfort, pelvic floor dysfunction, postpartum challenges, or stress-related tension, osteopathic care offers a comprehensive approach that considers the entire body rather than focusing solely on isolated symptoms.

Final Thoughts

From an osteopathic perspective, jaw clenching and pelvic floor tension are often expressions of how the body adapts to stress, load, and stability demands.
By addressing breathing mechanics, fascial relationships, posture, movement patterns, and nervous system regulation, osteopathic treatment can help improve coordination and function throughout the entire body.
If you are experiencing jaw tension, TMJ discomfort, pelvic floor dysfunction, or stress-related symptoms, osteopathic care may help uncover the underlying patterns contributing to your symptoms and support long-term recovery and resilience.

Acupuncture for Breech Baby: A Natural Option to Support Your Birth Plan

6/3/2026

Finding out your baby is in a breech position can bring up a lot of emotions. Many parents immediately begin hearing about the possibility of a C-section, surgical delivery, and the recovery process that follows. If this wasn't part of your original birth plan, it's understandable to feel concerned.
Before assuming surgery is your only option, it's worth knowing that there are natural approaches that may help encourage your baby to turn.

How Acupuncture Can Help a Breech Baby

Acupuncture has been used for centuries to support healthy pregnancies and is commonly used to help encourage babies in a breech position to move head-down in preparation for birth.
Typically, treatment begins around 34 weeks of pregnancy. A combination of acupuncture and moxibustion—a gentle warming technique using the herb mugwort—is often recommended. Research has shown that acupuncture treatments twice per week combined with daily moxa therapy for approximately 10 days can result in a success rate of up to 72% for turning breech babies.

Why Do Some Babies Remain Breech?

Several factors can increase the likelihood of a breech presentation, including:
    •    Too much or too little amniotic fluid
    •    A history of previous breech pregnancies
    •    Multiple fetuses (twins, triplets, etc.)
    •    Having carried multiple pregnancies to term
    •    Placenta previa
    •    Scar tissue from previous abdominal surgeries
    •    Certain uterine variations, such as a bicornuate uterus
    •    Having been born breech yourself
While these factors can contribute to breech positioning, every pregnancy is unique.

What Happens During Treatment?

At Dalhousie Health & Wellness, I use gentle acupuncture techniques designed to help relax muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues throughout the body. By reducing tension and creating more space within the pelvis and abdomen, we encourage optimal conditions for your baby to move into a head-down position.
Many patients find acupuncture treatments deeply relaxing, and babies often respond positively during the course of care.

Exploring Your Options

If you've recently learned that your baby is breech, there may still be time to support natural positioning before delivery. Acupuncture offers a safe, gentle, and non-invasive approach that can complement your prenatal care and help you feel more empowered during the final weeks of pregnancy.
If you have questions about whether acupuncture is right for you, I would be happy to discuss your individual situation and create a treatment plan tailored to your needs.
