Finding out your baby is in a breech position can bring up a lot of emotions. Many parents immediately begin hearing about the possibility of a C-section, surgical delivery, and the recovery process that follows. If this wasn't part of your original birth plan, it's understandable to feel concerned. Before assuming surgery is your only option, it's worth knowing that there are natural approaches that may help encourage your baby to turn. How Acupuncture Can Help a Breech BabyAcupuncture has been used for centuries to support healthy pregnancies and is commonly used to help encourage babies in a breech position to move head-down in preparation for birth. Typically, treatment begins around 34 weeks of pregnancy. A combination of acupuncture and moxibustion—a gentle warming technique using the herb mugwort—is often recommended. Research has shown that acupuncture treatments twice per week combined with daily moxa therapy for approximately 10 days can result in a success rate of up to 72% for turning breech babies. Why Do Some Babies Remain Breech?Several factors can increase the likelihood of a breech presentation, including: • Too much or too little amniotic fluid • A history of previous breech pregnancies • Multiple fetuses (twins, triplets, etc.) • Having carried multiple pregnancies to term • Placenta previa • Scar tissue from previous abdominal surgeries • Certain uterine variations, such as a bicornuate uterus • Having been born breech yourself While these factors can contribute to breech positioning, every pregnancy is unique. What Happens During Treatment? At Dalhousie Health & Wellness, I use gentle acupuncture techniques designed to help relax muscles, ligaments, and connective tissues throughout the body. By reducing tension and creating more space within the pelvis and abdomen, we encourage optimal conditions for your baby to move into a head-down position. Many patients find acupuncture treatments deeply relaxing, and babies often respond positively during the course of care. Exploring Your OptionsIf you've recently learned that your baby is breech, there may still be time to support natural positioning before delivery. Acupuncture offers a safe, gentle, and non-invasive approach that can complement your prenatal care and help you feel more empowered during the final weeks of pregnancy. If you have questions about whether acupuncture is right for you, I would be happy to discuss your individual situation and create a treatment plan tailored to your needs.
